A brief introduction to the icons you're likely to see in Moodle.

Activity Icons

More Common Activities

Icon Name Description
Moodle forum icon Forum (Discussion) An online discussion forum. Discussions in a discussion forum are not real-time. Probably the most common activity you'll do in Moodle.
Moodle Assignment icon Assignment Where you may submit your assignments in Moodle. Sometimes you will upload a single file. Other times you will upload multiple files. Still other times you will type directly on the page. Rarely this will just be a place-holder so that an item will appear in the Moodle gradebook.
Moodle Wiki icon Wiki A group-edited collaborative document (or series of documents).  
Moodle Quiz icon Quiz What it sounds like.
Moodle Questionnaire icon Questionnaire Like a quiz, but not graded.

 

Less Common Activities

Icon Name Description
Moodle Adaptive Quiz icon Adaptive Quiz A quiz whose questions get progressively more difficult or easier depending on whether the previous question was answered correctly.
Moodle Blog icon Blog A site for you to write and reflect. May be visible to the entire class, to everyone with an account to sign in to Moodle at AMBS, or possibly to the entire world, depending on how the instructor sets it up.
Moodle Chat icon Chat A live, online text chat. If your instructor uses this ask them to use Google Chat instead. Seriously.
Moodle Choice Icon Choice A one-question questionnaire.
Moodle Database icon Database A student-populated database (e.g., In a database for a course on Film and Theology the instructor may create fields for Movie Title, Director, Year, and Theological Theme. Students would populate the database with specific examples.)
Moodle Glossary icon Glossary A student-edited and -created list of terms and their definitions.
Moodle Journal icon Journal Like a blog, but between the instructor and you.
Moodle Lesson Icon Lesson A guided way to work through certain course material. May include some quiz-type questions as you progress.

Moodle Microsoft Excel File Excel file
Moodle folder icon Folder Will contain one or more documents.
Moodle Adobe PDF file icon PDF (Adobe) file
Moodle Microsoft PowerPoint icon PowerPoint file
Moodle text page icon Text Page A link to a page of text (within Moodle)
Moodle URL icon URL (website) A link to a website (not necessarily within Moodle)

automatic activity completion box (blank) Automatic progress (incomplete) Activities or resources with this box will be automatically marked as complete once certain conditions are met.
automatic progress box (checked) Automatic progress (complete)
manual progress box (blank) Manual progress (incomplete) Activities or resources with this box can be marked as complete by students.
manual progress box (checked) Manual progress (complete)

 

Editing Icons

Icon Name Description
assign roles icon Assign roles Click to assign a role to a user for this activity (e.g., make a student the teacher for one discussion)
collapse submenu icon Collapse Icon shows that a submenu or section is open. Click to hide (collapse) that submenu or section.
delete icon Delete Delete the currently selected item.
duplicate icon Duplicate Make a copy of the currently selected item.
Edit (rename) icon Edit (rename) Rename an activity or resource without viewing full settings.
Hide icon Hide Icon indicates that an object is visible. Click to make it unavailable to students.
Move right (indent) icon Indent Indent a label or activity.
Move (drag) icon Move Move an object elsewhere on the page by clicking and dragging this icon.
Move left icon Outdent Outdent a label or activity.
No groups icon No groups Icon shows that the activity is shared by the entire class (all students can see all other students work). Click to apply group mode (if you use groups in your course).
open submenu icon Expand Icon shows that a submenu or section is available but hidden. Click to view (expand) that submenu or section.
separate groups icon Separate groups Icon shows that each group has their own activity and cannot see the work of other groups for that activity.
Settings icon Settings Sometimes opens a submenu; sometimes goes to a settings page.
Show icon Show Icon indicates an object is unavailable (hidden) to students. Click to make it available.
Visible groups icon Visible groups Icon shows that each group has their own activity, but can view (not edit) the work of other groups.
